PLASTIC SPOON is a New York-based Rock'n'Roll band which perform songs mostly about money and people. Their songs are often based on true stories. Some of the topics include poverty, the decline of capitalism, global aging, the banking and food industries, prison-industrial complex, etc. The members of the band have individually worked with a "who's who" of music and art in the US, Europe and Japan. They are currently recording their first album in mono.
Kato Hideki (bass) is bassist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer. He is the main songwriter and the mastermind of the band. He has released his own music on Tzadik, Virgin UK and other labels, with his projects Death Ambient (with Fred Frith and Ikue Mori), Green Zone (with Otomo Yoshihide and Uemura Masahiro), Omni (with Nakamura Toshimaru and Akiyama Tetsuzi) and Tremolo of Joy (with Charlie Burnham, Briggan Krause and Calvin Weston). His work is often based around themes, such as environmental and social issues. Besides his own projects, he has worked with Otomo Yoshihide, Yuka Honda, Eyvind Kang, Christian Marclay, Billy Martin, New York City Ballet, Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Zeena Parkins, John King, Bruce Springsteen, Marc Ribot, John Zorn and many others. Karen Mantler (vocal & harmonica) is the daughter of jazz musicians Carla Bley and Michael Mantler. As a songwriter and a bandleader, her style has attracted a world-class list of musicians to her band throughout the years, including Steven Bernstein, Eric Mingus, Hiram Bullock and Arturo O’Farrill. As an instrumentalist and vocalist, Mantler has shared the stage with the likes of Terry Adams, Jack Bruce and Elvis Costello to name a few. She performs frequently in Europe with various musicians, most notably John Greaves and Peter Blegvad. Robert Wyatt included three of Karen’s compositions on his 2003 recording, “Cuckooland”, which also featured her on harmonica and vocals. As a Hammond organ player, Karen has been touring and recording with The Carla Bley Big Band since 1988. She also contributes her talents as a songwriter to PLASTIC SPOON. Doug Wieselman (guitar) is a composer, arranger and musician. He co-leads Kamikaze Ground Crew who have recorded 5 albums as well as leading his own ensemble – Trio S with Jane Scarpantoni and Kenny Wollesen. As a musician, he worked with Hal Wilner, Bill Frisell, Eyvind Kang, Robin Holcomb, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Steven Bernstein, Martha Wainwright, Yuka Honda and John Lurie and the Lounge Lizards, among many others. In theater he has worked with director Robert Woodruff and the Flying Karamazov Brothers, in dance with Jerome Robbins and Paul Taylor. Shahzad Ismaily (drums) is a largely self-taught composer and musician, having mastered the electric and double bass, guitar, banjo, accordion, flute, drums, various percussion instruments and various analog synthesizers and drum machines. Ismaily has recorded and performed with Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed, Tom Waits, Jolie Holland, Secret Chiefs 3, John Zorn, Elysian Fields, Nels Cline, Carla Kihlstedt’s Two Foot Yard, and the Tin Hat Trio.
